Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) in Whippets
Cardiac condition — Whippet — Medium breed
Moderate RiskWhat is Mitral Valve Disease (MVD)?
Mitral valve disease is the most common heart condition in dogs overall and the dominant cardiac condition in small breeds. The mitral valve between the left heart chambers degenerates over time, causing a heart murmur and eventually congestive heart failure. Some breeds develop MVD at unusually young ages due to heritable factors.
Symptoms of Mitral Valve Disease (MVD)
- Heart murmur detected by veterinarian (often before outward symptoms)
- Coughing, particularly at night or after lying down
- Labored or rapid breathing
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Fainting or weakness
- Fluid accumulation in the chest or abdomen
How Is Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) Diagnosed?
A heart murmur detected during routine examination is usually the first sign. Definitive diagnosis uses echocardiogram to assess valve anatomy and heart function. Chest X-rays evaluate heart size and lung fluid. Grading the murmur (I–VI) gives a rough progression guide.
Treatment & Cost
In early stages, monitoring without medication. Once heart enlargement begins, medications such as pimobendan, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics are introduced. The EPIC and PROTECT trials established evidence-based treatment protocols now used widely. With modern treatment, dogs can live comfortably for years after diagnosis.
Most pet insurance plans cover mitral valve disease (mvd) treatment in full when the policy is active before diagnosis. Compare plans below.
